Globally, about 800 women die every day of preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth; 20% of these women are from India. Further, mothers in the lowest economic bracket have about a two and a half times higher mortality rate. A third of women of reproductive age in India are undernourished, with a body mass index (BMI) of less than 18.5 kg/m2. It is widely known that an undernourished mother will give birth to an undernourished baby, perpetuating an intergenerational cycle of undernutrition.
SAHAYOG believes that Universal Health Care and Health for All is essential as the most marginalised are often the ones who bear the brunt of high out-of-pocket expenses that pushes them into indebtedness and impoverishment.
Legal restrictions and a lack of safe options mean that women and adolescent girls unnecessarily risk their health and lives every day. At PSI, we believe that everyone has a right to safe and legal abortion services, products and information, as well as post-abortion care and contraception.
